Do you feel that your smile is too “gummy”? That your gums are too prominent or your teeth seem too short? Or are your teeth uneven in length, making your smile seem lopsided?
At the Stow Dental Group, we have cosmetic dentists who are very experienced with laser dentistry and can shape your gum tissue, so that more of each tooth is visible, or more of some teeth, and your smile becomes straight and even.
What is a laser?
Lasers are man-made lights, and there are many types, each type made for a specific purpose. Lasers convert electrical energy into light energy, and all lasers have some features in common:
- Lasers are directional lights, meaning that they focus very minutely, as opposed to a headlight, for instance, which spreads its light out in many directions
- Lasers are monochromatic, meaning that they contain only one color, as opposed to white light which contains all colors. Some lasers are outside our visible color range, and are therefore called “ultraviolet” (meaning higher than the violet vibration), or “infrared” (meaning lower than the red vibration). If you think of a rainbow, you’ll remember that violet is on one side and red on the other. There are light vibrations on either side of a rainbow but we can’t see them.
Lasers in dentistry
The lasers used in dentistry are a group known as “soft tissue lasers” and are cool, ultraviolet lasers. Some examples are: Er:YAG laser, diode lasers, some CO2 lasers and the ND:YAG laser.
Because of their coolness, they don’t cause any tissue damage when they’re used in medical and dental procedures. When the laser beam contacts soft tissue, the tissue absorbs the light, converts it into heat, and thereby evaporates itself. This is how a laser can re-shape your gums.
There’s some heat involved, but it isn’t painful. By comparison, other lasers are so hot they can cut through steel by melting it.
Advantages of laser use
- Soft tissue lasers have very short wavelengths, which means they have high energy, and therefore work very quickly. That means treatment time is very short.
- The laser kills bacteria, reducing the likelihood of infection.
- Bleeding is reduced because the laser seals the tissue closed.
- There’s little or no pain or swelling afterwards.
- No stitches are needed.
- Healing time is short, just 4 or 5 days.
